Double Up!
November 12, 2024
If you have a bathroom vanity that has two doors under the sink, the usual thing to do is to put the same pulls or knobs on the doors. You can put the same thing twice, identically shaped and colored knobs, or you can do something else and use figural cabinet knobs.
My question is, did you know that we sell matched pairs in many of our cabinet knobs? Matched as in they can face each other, or not! Another important question is, which way do you use them: facing toward each other, or facing away from each other? Facing each other, they seem more friendly, or facing away from each other a little more adversarial.
We have matched pairs in dolphins, palm trees, butterfly fish, sitting pelicans, three kinds of ducks, flip flops, manatees, sea horses, mermaids, humpback whales, angelfish, sperm whales and bass! That’s in cabinet knobs, but we also have a few matched pairs in cabinet pulls, too. You can use matched pairs in your kitchen to bring unity to your look, or to help you remember the organization of your kitchen items. Use alliteration to help you mark where your spatulas and spoons are by putting matched pairs of sea horses on drawers. Use seated pelicans to remind yourself where your plates and pitchers, or palm trees for your pots and pans.
Use a matched pair on your pantry or bedroom closet doors if they’re bi-fold doors. Use them on the doors of your glass front bookshelf or secretary. If you don’t mind doing a little work on your cabinets, put one on the cabinet on either side of your kitchen sink to hang towels to dry dishes, countertops and hands. Use several matched pairs on a tall bank of double drawers of several different designs or just one design. Use a matched pair on a piece of wood that you paint to make a coat hanger for two coats, two lanyards, reusable bags for shopping, the dog’s leash and the “pick up bags”, whatever. If you have a piano that has knobs to open the keyboard cover, replace the regular knobs with a matched pair of whales or ducks because they make music, too, with their songs.
Matched pairs are a lot of fun if you use our imagination and get your creative juices going. Make simple bookends of wood and put a matched pair on the bookends. Have favorite DVDs you want to display? Use dowels and two square pieces of wood slightly bigger than the DVDs (or CDs) for the ends, drill a hole all the way through the center of the pieces of wood for your matched pair of knobs, then drill halfway through the pieces of wood; two drillings at the bottom of the wood, three inches apart, the front one slightly higher than the back one, one at the back of the pieces of wood about three-fourths of the way up. Remember, there’s an inside and an outside of these pieces of wood, so when you cut the squares, put a dab of your chosen paint color on the inside of each piece and drill on the inside for everything except the center “all the way through” holes. Cut the dowels long enough to accommodate the number of DVDs or CDs you want to display, plus a little bit more to enable you to glue the dowels into the drilled places. Wipe away any excess glue. Let that dry, paint the whole thing and you’ve got a way to display your favorite DVDs or CDs.
Don’t let the opportunity to use a matched pair to enhance your coastal décor’s creative aspects pass you by.
