Bold Colorful Coastal
October 03, 2024
When we think of “coastal décor” we usually think of white, off-white, soft blues and greens and shiplap and light wood tones. That’s what the “traditional” Western “coastal décor” consists of, but not every country is under the “Western” influence when it comes to their coastal choices. Actually, an American state is a bit unorthodox for coastal. Hawai’i uses bright, bold colors and they don’t mean in small quantities, but king size quilts and other things. It’s not the traditional look, but Hawai’i has its own rules and color is a big part of those rules.
Western nations have similar color schemes for coastal décor, but other nations incorporate their own ideas, lifestyles, colors and traditions. For instance, Haiti has a lot of bold colors for their coastal décor, too. Bold colors for coastal décor may be a surprise for westerners, but it works for others because they don’t have western sensibilities and may not be exposed to the western norms. In China, they have fire engine red lacquered wood furniture and they use red throughout their décor. Their wood tones are not always the light woods that we see in western cultures.
In India, there are vibrant colors and natural woods; bold colors making a bright statement and wood – sticks or boards – acting as the calming unifier. In Brazil they use slightly different bright and bold colors but it doesn’t require pastels to create a coastal look. Color combinations for bold coastal looks vary making bold coastal looks more unique than the traditional western colors. They pop with yellows, reds, yellow-greens, dark turquoise, pinks, or dark blues; totally opposite of the pale blues, soft greens and off-whites we are used to. Russians have a different pallet, but the idea is the same: cultural, traditional looks create a different kind of coastal décor, one that applies to that area.
It's different from our Americanized version of coastal, but it’s coastal of a different color, literally. If you love bold colors and combinations that wouldn’t work in our traditional coastal cool tones, go for the color! Don’t think that you must stick with what others do if you want to do a coastal décor of a different stripe. Go for what is going to make you think of the water, the waves lapping the shore and the sand beneath your feet. It’s not a law that coastal décor is only allowed to be a specific thing. Create your own thing, dare to be unique. It’s okay to use bold colors and unique accessories like these:
